The biggest danger with being comfortable is that you begin to expect and crave the status quo. Over time, you might even fight to maintain it, rather than dreaming what “could be” or “should be”.
God calls us to be uncomfortable with the world, and completely satisfied in Him. It is significant that God is Holy—because He is completely other than what we see around us. He is in every way greater, better, stronger, more loving, etc.
And so, rather than becoming comfortable, we are called to be sojourners and aliens, never finding a home, but looking to a future kingdom, proclaiming “The Kingdom of God is at hand”… and that means being dreamers and visionaries.
In Acts 2, with the Holy Spirit, we see the fulfillment of Joel’s vision that “your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions”. With the Holy Spirit dwelling inside you, there should be a constant discomfort and uneasiness with the world around you.
In Romans 8, Paul calls this a groaning—awaiting the glory that will be revealed in the resurrection, as the Spirit groans within us.
Friends, don’t get comfortable. Don’t enjoy the things of the world. We are to be in the world, but not of the world. We should have a holy discomfort inside of us, which groans for the things of God. If this isn’t the case, we need to check ourselves— you might be losing your first love… you may become lukewarm.
And so, seek first the Kingdom of God, and God’s righteousness. Don’t become comfortable. Always push to see His Kingdom come, and His will done on earth as it is in heaven—and that will begin inside of you.
Peace and love.
